On Creative Process and the Role of AI

A Note on Creative Process and the Use of AI Tools

Transparency matters to me, so this page sets out honestly how I work and where AI fits into that process.

I begin each day early, usually by six or seven in the morning, and the majority of my waking hours are given over to creative work in one form or another. That has been true since I left full-time employment in 2021, and it is not something I take for granted.

What I do myself:

Writing, composition, illustration, graphic design, video editing, and web design are all done by hand or by me directly. I have played piano since the age of fifteen and have used music production software for just as long. I am not an amateur in any of these areas. My book covers, manuscript layouts, custom Rune fonts, calligraphy, and hand-drawn illustrations are my own work. Where AI-generated images appear, I say so. My preference is always hand-drawn.

My prose is written by me. My music is composed by me. My ideas are my own.

Where AI fits in:

I use AI primarily as an analytical and editorial tool, for sounding out ideas, reviewing structure, and checking clarity. For minor or time-sensitive tasks, I occasionally use AI to assist in generating prose, though this is typically drawn from my own existing writing, condensed or reshaped rather than invented from nothing. Published fiction, music, and substantive creative work is always human-led and human-written. AI assists my process; it does not drive it.

This distinction matters to me, and I want it to be clear.

On misrepresentation and harassment:

I have experienced coordinated bad-faith reporting and targeted campaigns across multiple platforms, largely from individuals who conflate any use of AI tools with wholesale AI generation. That conflation is factually wrong and, in some cases, demonstrably malicious.

To be direct: claims that my work is entirely or predominantly AI-generated are inaccurate and defamatory. My creative output represents thousands of hours of skilled, human-led work. The use of analytical or editorial AI tools, now standard across the creative industries, does not change that.

Any individual or group engaging in targeted harassment, false reporting, or coordinated inauthentic behaviour directed at my accounts or publications will be documented and reported to relevant platforms, service providers, and, where appropriate, legal authorities.

I am committed to honest, rigorous, human-led creative work. Thank you for taking the time to understand how that work is made.

Note when AI is used:

I occasionally utilise Artificial Intelligence to develop supplementary material or to experiment with new textures based upon my own established recordings and writings. This integration allows for greater efficiency in production without compromising the authentic foundation of the finished piece.

I believe that the thoughtful application of these tools is a valid extension of the modern creative journey, and I remain committed to the integrity of the work presented here.
